A MOTHER'S INSPIRATION 1994

Charlotte Vøhtz’s drive to create truly organic skin care began when her young daughter Sandra was battling multiple skin allergies and eczema. She searched the high street for natural products that would be gentle on Sandra’s sensitive skin but found that many so-called natural skin care brands used almost entirely synthetic ingredients. In fact you only need to have less than 1% natural or organic ingredients in the formulation to call it ‘natural’.

Charlotte says, “From that moment, I realised that we all are children of the chemical age and that man-made chemicals found everywhere, combined with changing dietary habits, profoundly affect us all”.

TAILORED SKIN CREAMS FOR HER DAUGHTER 1995

The lack of gentle, natural products on the market spurred Charlotte on to create her own organic creams and salves, carefully tailored to her daughter’s allergy-prone skin.

Charlotte says, “There are many motivations behind an entrepreneurial spirit – to be your own boss, make money or start something new. For me the motivation came from wanting to help treat the skin problems that Sandra was suffering with. As any parent of a child with severe skin problems will know, it can be a long and frustrating battle to find treatments that work."

GREEN PEOPLE IS BORN 1997

After years of product research and development, Green People was founded in 1997. From the very beginning Charlotte’s principles meant that product performance and ethical practice were never sacrificed for profit. A close working relationship was built with product manufacturers in Europe to create the initial product range; a relationship which still exists to this day.

With a promise to never use aggressive ingredients or synthetic chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, alcohol (ethanol) or synthetic fragrances or colourants, and to never test on animals, Green People was born.

SETTING THE STANDARDS 1999

After seeing the misleading claims made by other beauty brands, Charlotte was determined to introduce regulation in an industry where you only need 1% of natural ingredients to call your products ‘natural’. She approached the Soil Association, the leading UK organisation for organic certification, to encourage them to form standards for organic health and beauty products.

In 1999 Charlotte was invited to be on a Soil Association committee to design the first standards for organic beauty. Charlotte, and later Green People’s Cosmetic Scientist Ian Taylor, played a huge role in setting natural and organic cosmetic regulations.

SPREADING THE WORD 2000-2014

From the first stockist of one local independent health store in Sussex and a growing online presence, Charlotte proved that there was demand for effective organic skin care products. Green People became stocked in multiple national retailers as well as declining offers to be sold in leading pharmacies and big businesses that didn’t meet Charlotte’s high ethical standards.

BUILDING A LOYAL FOLLOWING 2000-2014

First class customer service with a personal touch and outstanding products has brought Green People close to the hearts of thousands of people. The countless testimonials from grateful customers who are relieved to have finally found skin care that works for them, are proof of the impact of Charlotte’s commitment to effective organic solutions.

During this time, Green People has been presented with over 140 awards from magazines and organisations including Natural Health Magazine, Ultimate Natural Beauty Bible and The Green Parent, along with the midwife-approved TIPS awards for the Organic Babies range.

The Haka is a traditional ancestral war dance of the Māori people in New Zealand with a very special meaning 'Be a strong fighter, find strength by choosing to smile through whatever challenges life brings'. This is the message we have instilled in our Courtney.

Haakaa is a 100% family owned and New Zealand run company. The message behind our brand is a strong and passionate one and it is what drives us everyday to do what we do. Haakaa was developed through our struggle to find non-toxic and safe products for our daughter Courtney. Courtney is special needs being born with Autism among other disabilities. When protecting her health and preserving the environment for her future became our top priority, haakaa was born. Over the years, we found it extremely difficult to find green products suitable for infants and children. With most Eco baby brands only carrying a limited range and shipping to New Zealand was difficult and expensive. That was when we realised we could develop a range that is not only convenient and versatile, but also safe for more parents and their babies.

Our 100% soft cotton fabric is lovingly handpicked from Osaka, Japan, and purchased in limited quantity to maintain the exclusivity of our garments. Our concept is inspired by wabi-sabi わびさび – pure minimalism and rustic simplicity with understated elegance. Each of our garments are locally designed and made with passion. We give lots of attention to every single detail of our beautifully designed garments to ensure our young little clients are kept happy and comfy at all times!
